SAY GOODBYE TO RED DYE

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Department of Health and Human Services announced they will phase out blue, red, green, orange, and yellow petroleum-based synthetic dyes, many of which are banned in Europe and believed to cause or contribute to health risks. The timeline to phase out this initial group of eight synthetic dyes by the end of next year will be followed by additional colorings being added to the list and phased out in subsequent years.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also promised “an open-source website” where federal health officials will “post all the information we have about every additive.”

While the mechanics, and perhaps the chemistry of removing artificial dyes from US food products still needs to be worked out, there seems to be wide public support for removing these dyes and reducing the amount of sugar in the foods we consume.

Given that these synthetic dyes are present in candy, snacks, beverages, the coatings on fruit, and even the casings of meat products, the FDA’s revocation of authorization to use them will not only change the appearance of many food products, but provide benefits to those manufacturers who are able to comply and reformulate faster than others.
