The AI-Enabled Field Sales Force

Stage 4: Pitch

Every store is a different negotiation. Your pitch should know that.

By Sam Barclay, Chief Growth Officer, StayinFront

The Process

The five stages of sales enablement on the StayinFront Retail Optimization Platform are Opportunity (Size of Prize per outlet per SKU, StayinFront Dynamic Routing), In-Store Conditions (realogram, OSA, share of shelf, quality of shelf, measured instantly), Coach (problem, options, reasons, recommended action), Pitch (custom pitch for that buyer at that moment, tracked, and automated into an order), and Measure and Goal Set (ROI of every action, granular goals).

Stage four is where all the preceding intelligence either becomes revenue or evaporates.

The Last Three Feet

There is an old retail phrase about the “last three feet”: the distance between the shopper and the product. In field sales there is a different last three feet: the distance between the representative and the store buyer, across a counter, in the ninety seconds before the buyer’s attention moves elsewhere.

Everything upstream is preparation for that moment. The Size of Prize, the realogram, the prioritized Next Best Action: all of it is worth precisely nothing if the representative cannot make the buyer see it.

Here is what makes it hard: the same fact lands differently in every store. The independent grocer who owns his outlet cares about cash cycle and shelf space he cannot get back. The convenience chain area manager cares about compliance and consistency. A major grocery banner store manager may care about inventory control metrics he is personally measured on. One pitch deck, delivered identically, will succeed with none of them.

Historically the answer was representative talent. The best representatives read the room, reframed the same data three ways, and closed. The other eighty percent delivered the deck as written. That variance is your execution gap, and it is not solvable through training alone.

The Pitch stage industrializes what good representatives do instinctively. The platform creates a custom pitch for that store buyer, for that moment in time, provides options rather than a single script, tracks the usage of the pitch through breadcrumbs so it can be analyzed later, and automates the administrative process of turning a sales pitch into an order.

Two named capabilities carry this. Augment®, a division of StayinFront, uses augmented reality (AR) to paint the picture for the buyer, showing them what the display will actually look like in their store, in their aisle, at their scale. StayinFront Pitchbook® with Augment® brings a fact-based, store-specific pitch to the buyer, with a unique pitch for every outlet.

Three Benefits That Are Easy to Underestimate

One: showing beats telling, especially with space. The hardest thing to sell a store owner is floor space, because floor space is finite, visible and emotionally owned. “A two-meter secondary display of the chilled range” is an abstraction he can decline without effort. An augmented-reality rendering of that display standing in his actual store is a concrete proposal he has to argue against. Augment® changes the burden of imagination, and therefore the burden of objection.

Two: breadcrumbs turn selling into a learnable system. Tracking which pitch was used, in which store, with what result, creates a dataset that has never existed in most organizations. Over a few cycles you can answer questions that were previously matters of opinion: which argument converts in independents versus chains, which proof point works for a price objection, which representatives are using which materials and how that maps to conversion. That is how you move the eightieth-percentile representative toward the ninetieth, with evidence about what works rather than a training course.

Three: automating pitch-to-order removes the tax on success. This is the least glamorous benefit and possibly the most valuable. In a lot of field organizations, a successful pitch triggers a burst of administration: write the order, re-key it, email the confirmation, log the outcome. That admin is levied disproportionately on your most successful visits, which is a perverse incentive. Automating the path from agreed pitch to placed order removes the tax and gives the time back to selling.

The Question Worth Sitting With

If you took your top-performing representative and your median representative into the same store with the same data, would they make the same pitch? If not, where does that difference currently live: in a person, or in a system?

Talent that lives only in people leaves when they do. Talent encoded into a platform compounds.

Where This Leaves You

The Pitch stage converts intelligence into agreement and agreement into an order, with a data trail that makes the next pitch better. Combined with the breadcrumb data feeding stage five, it turns selling from an individual art into an organizational capability.

Next in the series is Measure and Goal Set, covering why correlation is not good enough and what changes when you can prove causation.

Somewhere in the system there are dozens of exception rules firing daily into a representative’s task list. They flag out-of-stocks, price gaps, compliance failures and distribution voids. The rules work. The alerts are accurate. Even so, adoption is somewhere south of forty percent, because the representative opens the list, sees eighteen items, has time for four, and has no principled way to choose.
